Juha Perttula Village Smith Puukko, curly birch
A simple all-purpose knife
Metallurgist, knife maker, and non-fiction author Juha Perttula has crafted a stylish version of the popular Maasepän Puukko with a longer blade than the original model.
The blade measures 10.5 cm, with the cutting edge hardened to a hardness of 63 HRC. The Maasepän Puukko does not have any bolsters. The tang has been notched and securely glued into the handle with epoxy. The handle is made of oiled curly birch. The Maasepän Puukko comes without a sheath; instead, a plastic blade guard protects the edge.
In rural villages, blacksmiths were responsible for all necessary forging work related to agriculture, leaving little time for knife making. Leatherwork wasn't typically part of the blacksmith's trade, so the responsibility for crafting a sheath, and often the handle as well, fell to the customer.
Juha Perttula's Maasepän Puukko Visa is a versatile knife suitable for a wide range of tasks.
